Winchester School of Art: reviving LGBT+ history

To mark LGBT+ history month UK Parliament is handing the mic over to students from Winchester School of Art.

The Parliamentary Archives and Winchester School of Art set students on the BA (Hons) Graphic Arts course the task of creatively responding to the LGBT+ records held by the Parliamentary Archives. The students did not disappoint and came up with unique and imaginative projects to tell the story of LGBT+ legislative history, which they present in this 60-minute talk.

Charlotte has created 'The Identity Archive' employing ever evolving abstract visual forms to explore an alternative to gender and sexuality expression.

Laura wanted her project to educate younger generations about the difficulties faced by the LGBTQ+ community throughout history. Choosing a non-binary character called Charlie, Laura presents Charlie's journey through time.

Ellie's project focuses on returning to the core values of Pride. The first Pride was a protest but over time the voice of protest has been lost through commercialisation. Using archival photographs of Pride events Ellie asks, 'How can we bring back the voice Pride once had?'.

Desired, admired, forgotten, erased: Hannah's project explores how it feels to be a lesbian in today's world. Hannah's work highlights how the lack of archives on female same sex attraction has erased lesbians from history. Using historical figures, photos and texts from earlier eras Hannah explores the words that were used to describe women on women love.

There will be opportunities throughout the talk for you to ask questions.
