The Birth of Northern Ireland 1912-21

To mark the centenary of the creation of Northern Ireland, Dr Éamon Phoenix takes us on a journey exploring the background to the Government of Ireland Act 1920 which ultimately led to the partition of the island of Ireland.

From the third Home rule crisis of 1912-14 through the demands of WW1, the 1918 general election and the rise of the republican Sinn Féin party to the Irish War of Independence, Dr Phoenix argues that the King's Speech, delivered by George V at the opening of the Northern Ireland Parliament in June 1921, led directly to a truce and the Anglo-Irish Treaty on 6 December 1921.

At the end of this 50 minute talk, 15 minutes are available for you to ask questions.
