Meet the contractors: Hargreaves Foundry

Join us in our new series of talks where we meet some of the contractors involved in the mammoth task of repairing and restoring the historic Elizabeth Tower, home of Big Ben.

Work to conserve and modernise the Tower is taking place not just in London but all over the country, with specialists from across the UK bringing together their expertise of traditional craft techniques and modern conservation technologies to ensure that this iconic building is safeguarded for future generations to enjoy.

In this free 45-minute talk, we'll hear from the Chairman of Hargreaves Foundry Michael Hinchcliffe on their work providing iron castings to the Tower, as well of the history of the company which has been operating in Halifax since 1881.

Although Hargreaves have been involved with restoration work on Elizabeth Tower and the Palace of Westminster for the past few years, the foundry's links to Parliament go back centuries via their home town of Halifax - the architect of the Palace of Westminster, Charles Barry, also designed Halifax's town hall!

Join this event to hear more about Hargreaves' evolution as an iron foundry and work today, including the time-intensive process of uniquely casting and replacing individual roof tiles for Elizabeth Tower.

At the end of the talk, 15 minutes will be available for you to ask questions.
