Lady Astor's Bill: why you have to be 18 to drink in a pub

Have you ever wondered why you must wait until you turn 18 to buy alcohol in a pub in the UK? Join this special event for Women's History Month, where Dr Mari Takayanagi, Senior Archivist in the Parliamentary Archives, explores the Intoxicating Liquor Act (Sale to Persons Under Eighteen) 1923, the first private members' bill passed by a female MP.

This 30-minute talk will explore the significance of a petition signed by 116,000 teachers, and how Nancy Astor pushed her bill through in the teeth of some die-hard opposition including from Edwin Scrymgeour, Britain's only Prohibitionist MP.

At the end of the talk, 15 minutes are available for you to ask questions.

This is an online event and will be hosted on Microsoft Teams Live Events which you can access through web browsers like Chrome, Firefox or Microsoft Edge. Safari is not currently supported. You do not need a Microsoft account to join the event. We will send full details of how to join the event online following registration.
