George IV Coronation Banquet: Spectacle & Feast

200 years ago the country celebrated the coronation of one of its most unpopular kings, George IV, with a massive banquet in Westminster Hall. Join our panel of experts as they discuss the drama, ceremony and pomp of the day.

The banquet was an integral part of the coronation - it lasted for hours and was filled with ancient traditions. It had become so popular that the attendees and spectators were no longer contained in the expansive Westminster Hall.

The coronation of George IV was also the final battleground of the war between the King and his estranged wife of twenty-six years, Caroline of Brunswick. Although not invited, Caroline boldly attempted to enter the coronation on 19th July 1821, only to have the door slammed in her face. This short talk will demonstrate that this spectacular snub was the culmination of a decades-long fight for Caroline's royal rights, whilst her husband desperately tried to be rid of her.

Speakers:
Dr Katie Carpenter is a historian and lecturer in the School of History and Heritage at the University of Lincoln. She got her PhD in gender history at Royal Holloway, University of London in 2019. From 2019 to 2020, she was an AHRC Creative Economy Engagement Fellow at the Parliamentary Archives.

Dr Philip Salmon joined the History of Parliament in 1997 after completing a doctorate and teaching at Oxford University. For the next eleven years he worked on the 1820-32 House of Commons volumes, which were published by Cambridge University Press in 2009. In 2009 he was appointed editor of the new 1832-1868 House of Commons project.

Dr Dorian Gerhold is an independent historian. He was a House of Commons Clerk from 1978 to 2012, and was Secretary of the House of Commons Commission in 2008-12. His books include a history of Westminster Hall. He is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and the Society of Antiquaries.
